 amritsar is an ancient city in the indian state of punjab. this popular city is home to several religions sites and fascinating tourist destinations. simplicity is the best attraction of this city, appealing to thousands of tourists to visit different tourist attractions. it was founded by fourth guru of sikh, guru ram das in the year 1574. the meaning of amritsar is “pool of nectar” - the home to the golden temple, the spiritual and cultural center of the sikh religion. the city is wealthy with some worldwide popular tourist attractions which are as follows:

golden temple
golden temple’s original name is harmandir sahib, whose construction was begun by fourth guru of sikh, guru ram das in 1574 and completed by the fifth guru arjan dev in 1601. although, some restoration and embellishments were continue over the years. in 19th century, 100 kilogram gold was applied on inverted-styled lotus shaped dome and some decorated marbles were also added. you cannot enter into the temple with shoes. also, everyone entering into the temple is required to wash feet into the pool. another most important rule in golden temple including other sikh temples is that you have to cover you head by cloth.

you can catch some magnificent views of golden temple during sunrise and sunset. this is one of largely visited pilgrimage center for sikhs, although, people from other religions are also allowed to enter the temple.

jalianwala bagh
jalianwala bagh is worldwide popular place for the massacre by general dyer during british rule over india. it was 13th april 1919, when under the supervision and lead of general dyer,  50 troops, including 25 gurkhas of 1st/9th gurkha rifles, 25 pathans and baluch of 54th sikhs and 59th sindh rifles, all armed, opened fire on a large gather of unarmed civilians, including men, women and children at the jallianwalla. about 1500 people were murdered and about same number injured.

at present, jalianwala bagh has become a major tourist spot, visited by thousands of domestic and international tourists every year. you can still see marks of bullets on wall, which are actually fired on weaponless civilians.

durgiana mandir
the foundation of durgiana mandir was laid down by pandit madan mohan malviya in 1924. it is a hindu temple, situated in the city of amritsar. the temple drives its name from hindu goddess durga and it is also known as lakshmi narayan temple. it is a very popular place, visited by thousands of national and international tourists every year.




baba atal rai tower
there is a belief among locals that guru hargovind had his last breaths at this place. this belief has also contributed to the importance of this tower all over the country. this is a nine storied tower with a superfine architectural work which turned it very beautiful. it is definitely a pilgrimage spot but tourists visit the tower for a casual hangout as well.
